Crafts by Perry's Mom was founded in 2001
after I decided to do something different with my life (and
work for myself). I wanted to offer products that were an
improvement on what is offered in stores.
I racked my brain for weeks trying to figure
out a company name. My first name is fairly common, and I
didn't want to pin my company name on one product as I
wanted to offer more than one product and have the ability
to add to the product line. I planned on adding more than
just fabric items to my line, so no clever fabric/sewing
related names. I finally decided that I would use the name
of my "baby" -- my fuzzy orange tabby cat and since my
family refers to me as his "mom," Crafts by Perry's Mom it
became!
The first product I began working on was a
fabric TV Remote Caddy similar to what I had made for family
members. Space is at a premium in our house so the normal
tabletop models weren't an option, but rather a fabric caddy
that lays over the arm of a chair or between the mattress
and box spring of a bed. (Sorry, we no longer make
these.)
I quickly added a Catnip Lounging Pad that
was machine wash/tumble dry and REFILLABLE. Most of the
mats/pads for kitties that had catnip, while washable, came
out a balled up mess and the catnip scent was gone. I
decided to make mine with a Velcro style opening so that the
catnip could be refreshed after washing the pad -- thereby
providing a long lasting kitty pleaser. At the same time I
added two styles of catnip toys to the line. I use many
different fabric patterns, unlike the stores with one or two
prints from which to choose.
Since that first year I have
made size changes to the lounging pads, many more styles of
cat toys, cat and dog themed: jewelry, checkbook covers,
and bookmarks. I create items that
are exclusively for cats and dogs or are cat and dog themed.
While I don't have a retail location, each
year I attend several craft shows in my home state of
Michigan. Combining my love of computers with my crafting
vocation, offering my products on the internet was a natural
decision.
I donate a portion of my proceeds to
Michigan Animal Rescue League -- the shelter from which
I adopted Perry. As a no-kill shelter they are always in
need of supplies and money.
